June 13, 2000 <br /> <br />support a 2.4 percent raise." Mayor Crabtree declared the Public Hearing open. <br />Michael Rogers, Police Chief, stated, "Recruitment and retention of police officers is a <br />nationwide problem. When the General Assembly approved huge raises for State and <br />County officers, it caused a big burden on municipalities. The ones who've shown the <br />most commitment are the farthest behind." Joseph Finley, of 1568 Roundabout Road, <br />stated, "1 would be pleased to see our police officers up to par on qualifications and <br />salary." Tony Millner, of 109 Jones Street, asked, "Why was the airport cut by <br />$10,000.007 Why do they get anything?" Vice Mayor Teague replied, "Their requests <br />have increased over time. The airport is an economic development engine." Mayor <br />Crabtree added, "They also need local matches to bring in federal money." Mayor <br />Crabtree declared the Public Hearing closed. Council Member Haskell stated, "1 need <br />to explore the recommendations presented tonight before I vote." Council Member <br />Roop stated, "Each of us has concerns." Council Member Dallas moved to adopt <br />Ordinance No. 2000-3, on first reading, as published and presented; the motion was <br />seconded. Vice Mayor Teague moved to amend the main motion by adding $25,000 to <br />the Police Depadment's budget to address staffing and to authorize the City Manager to <br />proceed with the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the subsidiary motion was <br />duly seconded and carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; <br />Yeas (5) - Crabtree, Dallas, Haskell, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None. The main motion <br />was carried by the following vote, with all members voting: Vote 5 - 0; Yeas (5) - <br />Crabtree, Dallas, Haskell, Roop, Teague; Nays (0) - None. <br /> <br /> Council considered approving, on first reading, of Ordinance No. 2000-4, <br />amending Chapter 21 - Taxation, Article VI - Tax on Prepared Food and Beverages of <br /> <br /> <br />
