244 <br /> <br />October 26, 1999 <br /> <br /> Council considered a presentation by the Piedmont Arts Association, Virginia <br />Museum of Natural:History, and Reynolds Homestead regarding their partnership of <br />these organizations in marketing our community. Steve Pike, of the Virginia Museum of <br />Natural History, stated, "Together, we're a lot stronger if we pull together than if we work <br />alone. These three organizations developed a poster promoting each with 7,000 copies <br />distributed regionally. We're also cooperating with eight other tourist attractions." Mr. <br />Pike then displayed a drawing of the new museum. Council Member. Haskell asked, <br />"Do you expect this to happen this year.'?": Mr. Pike replied, "1 expect it to be in the <br />Governor's budget, with groundbreaking in January 2001 and opening on April 24, <br />2002." Carolyn Beale, of the Reynolds Homestead, stated, "We've had fun with this <br />project. Our facility is a well-kept secret, just twenty miles up the road. We're non-profit <br />and only 'managed by Virginia Tech." Lynn Ward, of the Piedmont Arts Association, <br />stated, "Staff is stretched with educational outreach. By the time our Egyptian exhibit <br />closes, approximately 3,000 students will have visited it?' Council Member Haskell <br />asked, "What kind of help does the State Tourism Office provide?" Ms. Beale.replied, <br />"They sponsored a cultural tourism conference recently, but we do not directly receive <br />funds. I would encourage a tourism office in the area." · <br /> <br /> Council considered a request from American Tower Corporation for Triton PCS, <br />inc., for a Special Use Permit to construct a telecommunications facility at 900 Rives <br />Road. Wayne D. P. Knox, Planning, Zoning, & Housing Manager, stated, "At a meeting <br />today of the Planning Commission, they unanimously voted to recommend to Council <br />that the permit be granted with nine conditions.
