MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE <br /> <br />The City Council continues to oppose any legislation that would limit the useful life of the <br />City's munidpal solid waste landfill. <br /> <br />URBAN REDEVELOPMENT <br /> <br />The City Council continues to support the work of the Commission on the Condition and <br />Future of Virginia Cities. Of particular interest is the Commission's recommendation to <br />increase the state's appropriation to the Derelict Structures Fund to $10 Million Dollars <br /> <br />per year. <br /> <br />ROADS AND TRANSPORTATION <br /> <br />The City Council continues its support for increased funding and expedited progress on <br />the U.S. Route 58 Super-Highway Project, the Interstate 73 Project, and the <br />Liberty/Cleandew Improvement ProjecL Additionally, the City Council requests that the <br />U.S. 58 project be amended to add the rehabilitation of the Starling Avenue Bridge <br />Structure at a cost of $450,000. <br /> <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> <br />The City Council requests that: <br /> <br />· Legislation be submitted that increases timcling for juvenile detention home <br /> construction from $52,000 per bed to $53,000 per bed and that the new funding <br /> rate be applied to the W.W. Moore, Jr. Detention Home Construction; <br />· Legislation be submitted to amend Section 53.1-80 of the State Code to create a <br /> reimbursement category for new jail construction that would allow 40% state <br /> reimbursement for projects that involve the closing of a state certified jail farm <br /> where such a facility inhibits the efficient operation of local jail operations and <br /> where the cost of continuing to operate such a facility is not deemed by the Board <br /> of Corrections to be in the best long term financial interest of the Commonwealth; <br />· Legislation be submitted to amend Section 46.1028 and 46.1025 of the Virginia <br /> State Code to add mtmicipal safety officers to the list of those authorized to drive <br /> vehicles equipped with flashing, blinking, or alternating amber warning lights of <br /> types approved by the Superintendent of State Police; <br />· Any change to how Criminal Justice Training Academies are cu~ently conf~gured <br /> and funded be opposed. <br /> <br /> <br />
