TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1988 <br /> <br />After considering a report entitled, "Housing Situation", from City Manager <br />Brown, as well as Mr. Brown's comments thereon and comments-suggestions from <br />Mr. W. Allen Adams, of HABCO Construction, directed toward ways and means of <br />promoting and/or providing (more) affordable residential housing within the <br />City, Council directed that a special meeting be conducted by Council with area <br />developers/builders, at a date yet to be scheduled, for the purpose of <br />receiving their suggestions or recommendations on this subject matter. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of the following staff reports: <br /> <br />A financial report, prepared by Finance Director Richard D. <br />Fitts, for the period ended October 31, 1988; <br /> <br />On efforts by the City Administration and steps being taken <br />by the R. P. Thomas Trucking Company to eliminate or abate a <br />dust problem at the trucking company's terminal (parking lot) <br />situate~ at Fayette and Beaver Streets, as brought to <br />Council's attention at its November 8th meeting by the <br />Reverend Elijah Niblett and Mr. James Wesley Williams, area <br />residents; <br /> <br />On updated programming and rates for local cablevision <br />service, as presented by Mr. William Woolf, Manager of <br />Adelphia Communications' Martinsville cablevision division; <br /> <br />On the results of the City's employees' participation in the <br />1988 United Way Campaign, coordinated for the City by Mrs. <br />Vicki Nester, of the City's Parks and Recreation Department, <br />who was commended by City Manager Brown for her successful <br />efforts as were the 298 City employees (or 83% of the <br />employees) who pledged/contributed a total of $5,904.08, or <br />21% more than in last year's campaign; <br /> <br />On the estimated cost (ranging from $163,200.00 to <br />$277,000.00, with a probable estimated cost of $208,000.00) <br />of extending/installing City utilities (electric, water and <br />sewer lines) along Smith Lake Road; and <br /> <br />On the resignation of Mrs. Rebecca C. Miller, the City's <br />Director of Housing Services, effective December 31, 1988, <br />who has accepted the position of Program Manager with the <br />Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development. <br /> <br /> <br />
