TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 1988 <br /> <br />police officers from "desk" and "dispatch" duties to more demanding <br /> <br />responsibilities; whereas, Fire Chief W. Lewis Reeves cited the advantage, in <br /> <br />receiving and responding to fire calls, of the terminals which will display <br /> <br />locations and addresses of callers. Meanwhile, Councilman McClain, while <br /> <br />indicating concern with the operating system and additional costs (which <br /> <br />additional costs may be offset by staff reductions), described the proposed <br /> <br />joint venture as being commendable. Upon motions, duly seconded and <br /> <br />unanimously carried, Council took the following actions on this matter: <br /> <br />A. Approved an agreement with the County of Henry providing <br /> for the operation of a Joint Dispatch Center; <br /> <br />B. Approved By-Laws governing the operation of a Joint Dispatch <br /> Center; <br /> <br />Approved a three-way agreement between Central Telephone <br />Company of Virginia, the County of Henry, and the City of <br />Martinsville providing for the purchase and maintenance of <br />equipment for the system; and <br /> <br />Accepted for introduction a proposed ordinance which will <br />levy a surcharge on local telephone access lines (i.e., <br />customers) to finance the cost of facilities and to finance <br />the cost of necessary equipment and the maintenance thereof, <br />and called for a duly-advertised public hearing to be <br />conducted on said proposed ordinance and surcharge at <br />Council's forthcoming regular July 12th meeting. <br /> <br />Subject to approval by Council, the City School Board announced that it proposes <br />to allow children of all non-resident City employees to attend the City schools <br />tuition-free, beginning with the 1988-89 school year, a policy that was in force <br />for a number of years prior tO its being discontinued as of June 30, 1977. <br />Council continued this matter for discussion in Executive Session. <br /> <br /> <br />
