TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 1988 <br /> <br /> # <br /> <br />designated, whereupon Councilman Groden withdrew his motion, previously <br />offered, (seconded by Councilman Cole, who withdrew his "second"), that Council <br />adopt a resolution in support ofthe Central Virginia efforts. Concurrent <br />therewith, Vice-Mayor Willjams asked for more information on this subject and <br />Councilman Cole urged that the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development <br />Commission state its position in this matter. <br /> <br />On a proposal by the Blue Ridge Airport Authority to acquire land for an. <br />"approach clear zone" at Blue Ridge Airport (to allow for erection of <br />"lead-in" lights), for which application is being made for grant from the State <br />of Virginia for $35,880.00 towards total estimated cost of $44,850.00, which <br />application is now before the West Piedmont Planning District Commission in a <br />"clearinghouse" procedure, Council requested that the WPPDC "make a favorable <br />comment" on this project and application, the vote being four-to-one <br />(Vice-Mayor Willjams voting "No" because of uncertainty as to the impact of the <br />proposed land acquistion upon the area residents). <br /> <br />Mrs. Nancy N. Henderson, Chairman of the Martinsville-Henry County Clean <br />Community Commission, appeared before Council and described various on-going <br />activities of the Commission, including a paper recycling project undertaken by <br />a group in Martinsville Senior High School as well as a program entitled, "Help <br />Keep Smith River Clean", sponsored by the local chapter of Trout Unlimited. <br /> <br />Responding to Council's recent request for an estimate of the cost of the <br />recently-requested neighborhood playground for the Sellers Street area, City <br />Manager Brown reported that one site (which is preferred by the area residents, <br /> <br /> <br />
