TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 1988 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council adopted the <br />following ordinance (No. 88-4) which amends Section 9-46 (Article III, Fire <br />Prevention Code) of the City Code and, in effect, adopts the Virginia Statewide <br />Fire Prevention Code, with enforcement thereof to be the responsibility of the <br />City's Fire Marshal and the City's Board of Appeals to be the official appeals <br />board: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia, in regular session assembled April 12, 1988, that <br />Article III, Fire Prevention Code - Section 9-46, be and hereby <br />is amended, as follows: <br /> <br />For the purpose of establishing rates and regulations to <br />safeguard life, property and public welfare from the hazards <br />of fire and explosion in the use or occupancy of buildings, <br />structures, sheds, tents or other premises that certain Fire <br />Prevention Code known as the Virginia Statewide Fire <br />Prevention Code duly adopted by the Virginia Board of <br />Housing and Community Development under authority of 27-97, <br />Code of Virginia, save and except such portions as are <br />hereinafter in this article deleted, modified, amended added <br />or changed is hereby adopted and incorporated by reference <br />as if see forth herein verbatim. <br /> <br />State law reference: Authority to adopt Fire Prevention <br />Code, 1950 Code of Virginia, Section 27-98. <br /> <br />Appeals: The Martinsville Board of Appeals is hereby <br />designated as the appeals board tohear appeals arising from <br />the application of the provisions of "The Statewide Fire <br />Prevention Code". <br /> <br />At Council's request, Mr. Robert W. Dowd, Executive Director of the West <br />Piedmont Planning District Commission, appeared before Council and provided <br />Council with certain information pertaining to efforts by the Central Virginia <br />Planning District Commission to obtain a Port-of-Entry designation for Central <br />Virginia and, perhaps, to establish a Foreign Trade Zone for that area. While <br />expressing a desire to be cooperative in this matter, members of Council <br />expressed concerns that, if the Central Virginia (Lynchburg) area is so <br />designated, it would be unlikely that the Martinsville area could ever so be <br /> <br /> <br />
