466 <br /> <br />,- TUESDAY.-SEPTEMBER 25. 1990 <br /> <br />and I-"no" (McClain). <br />adopted: := <br /> <br />Therefore, the following Resolution was <br /> <br />WHEREAS, legalization of~-=.the sale and use of drugs would <br />increase total drug usage due . to lower prices and <br />availability; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, with increased usage, the number of addicted <br />people would increase~ and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, social and personal problems associated with <br />addiction would increase, such as crime, medica'l <br />problems, accidents, lower work-place productivity and <br />family disruption; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the drug epidemic occurred because society in <br />the past did not take a clear stand against illegal drug <br />use; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, our children have the right to grow up and live <br /> in communities which are drug free; and as parents and <br /> community leaders we have the obligation to make this <br /> =. -happen; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Drug Task Force, Inc. of Martinsville and <br /> Henry County recently adopted a resolution opposing the <br /> legalization of marijuana, cocaine and heroin; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br /> -=..,Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session .assembled <br /> September 25, 1990, that it does hereby express its <br />..... support. for the position of the Drug Task Force of <br /> Martinsville and Henry County opposing the legalization <br /> ofmarijuana, cocaine, and heroin. <br /> <br /> Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council set the <br /> following public hearings'for its October 9, 1990 meeting: (1) on <br /> a request by Christine M. Bennett and the 6ity of Martinsville to <br /> fezone Lotsl9, 20, 21 and 22 located on the north side of Starling <br /> Avenue from P-2 Professional and R-6 Residential to C-:iA <br /> Commercial; and (2) on a proposal to amend the City's Proposed Land <br /> Use Plan to designate an area located on the north side of Starling <br /> <br /> <br />
