TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 25. 1990

teach our children how to live successfully and happily
in a society where such drugs exist? If we do our part
as parents to learn to discuss these drugs - and
differences among them - with our children in a factual
and rational way and to discourage their use by our
children, haven't we done more to help our children avoid
the use of these drugs than by perpetuating the fiction
that their continued illegal status will make them
unavailable to our children? '

This is a difficult subject and it is personally
difficult for me to take a position on this issue which
is not-in accord with that of our Drug Task Force.· But
I do not believe this approach will reduce the
availability of the listed drugs and I know this approach
will perpetuate the most lucrative criminal activity in
' our" country to the detriment of far more of our citizens
'than the few unfortunates who become addicted to the use
of these- drugs.

Mr. Cole stated that this issue is worthy. of real debate, but that
he has been convinced that legalization would be wrong'. Mr. Cole
stated that he respected Mayor McClain's position and that he hoped
his' statements ~would cause the issue to be debated within the
community. CoUncilman Oakes stated that he strongly supported the
position of the Drug Task Force against the .legalization of drugs
and that he felt it would be a "big mistake" for 'Council to not
support the resolution. Councilman Oakes stated that alcohol, as
a legal substance, causes many problems in our society such as
contributing to deaths in automobile accidents. Upon motion, duly
seconded and by' a vote of 4 "yes" (Adams, Groden, =Oakes, and
Williams) and 1 "no" (McClain) Council endorsed the resolution

adopted by the Drug Task Force. Councilman Oakes made a motion
that Council adopt the resolution of the D[ug Task.Force and that
it~be sent to area' legislators. This motion was~seconded and
carried by a vote of 4 "yes" (Adams, Groden, Oakes~, a~d Willjams)
