TUESDAY~ APRIL 24, 1990 <br />"'Mr'~" Brown ~alsO 'stated that' he had met ./with ' officials of Hooker <br />Furniture Company and that, although they were in favor of the <br />'lextension of Commonwealth Boulevard, they were receptive to the <br />Study'of this alternative. Mr. Brown noted that the Hooker Street <br />project could be accomplished in much less ~time than the <br />Commonwealth Boulevard extension. In response to a question by <br />Mayor Oakes,~Mr.'Brown.stated that this project does not preclude <br />the four-laning of Commonwealth Boulevard to Chatham Road. In <br />response to a question by Vice-Mayor Williams, Mr. Brown said'that <br />~there'~woUld~ be a few~ houses' along Boden Streetswhich would be <br />displaced-if the project goes through. Councilman McClain noted <br />that due to the existence of vacant land, some of the housing along <br />=Boden Street could be moved instead of 'being demolished. <br />Councilman McClain also noted that the intersection of East Church <br />Street and Hooker Street would have to be studied 'and designed <br />carefully in order to create a workable intersection.;' <br /> <br />Council heard -a report from Nancy Henderson,~=Chairman of the <br />Martinsville-Henry County Clean Community Commission regarding a <br />recycling program which was conducted in cooperation with the <br />ICharity League. Ms. Henderson reported that glass, aluminum, and <br />newspapers were ~ collected for a period of 92 days by 70 <br />participating housel~olds. On April 2nd, all materials saved were <br />collected-at!a central location to be taken to the recyclers. The <br />~resUlte were:'29001bs. of glass, 262 ibs. of aluminum, and 5280 <br /> <br /> <br />
