TUESDAY .~ APRIL 24, 1990 <br /> <br />replacement- project-.-crossing the Norfolk Southern <br />Railroad which should be coordinated with the bridge <br />replacement project; and ..... <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the construction of the roadway as herein <br />described will delay or]negatethewidening and extension <br />of Commonwealth-Boulevard= from Fairy Street to East <br />Church Street at itsiintersection with Salmon Street, <br />as ·shown in the Martinsville Area 1985Transportation <br />Plan and as included in VDOT's Six-Year Program; now, <br />therefore, . '- ~ <br /> <br /> BE;' IT RESOLVED by the Council of. the City of <br /> Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session assembled <br /> April 24, 1990, that said Council requests the VDOT to <br /> amend the 1985 Year 2000 Transportation Plan to add and <br /> include-in that Plan the widening and extension of Hooker <br /> Street, beginning at the intersection of Commonwealth <br /> Boulevard and Fairy Street and extending southeastward <br /> to East Church Street at its intersection with Bob <br /> Gregory Street, following the general alignment as above <br /> described; and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that the herein <br /> described project be constructed in conjunction with the <br /> replacement of the current bridge structure on Church <br />~Street. crossing the Norfolk Southern Railroad; and <br /> <br />· :vBE ;IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Martinsville, <br /> Virginia agrees to pay its 2% share of the total cost of <br /> this project, including engineering, right-of-way, and <br /> construction costs. <br /> <br />Mr. Brown stated that he and Leon Towarnicki,, Director of Public <br />Works,-had met with state officials in order ~to. propose these <br />changes. The- state officials expressed some-interest in the <br />project and-felt that the costs would be no more than equal to the <br />costs~associated with the extension of Commonwealth Boulevard. Mr. <br />Brown stated that he and Mr. Towarnicki feel that-the cost of four- <br />laning Hooker Street from Fairy Street to°·East-Church Street would <br />be less expensive than the'extension of Commonwealth Boulevard. <br /> <br /> <br />
