292 <br /> <br />TUESDAY, MARCH27, 1990 <br /> <br />Upon mOtiOn, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council 'scheduled a public <br />hearing for April 10, 1990 on a request by the City of Martinsville onlbehalf <br />of the New Rive~ Regional Police Academy for a Special Use.Permit under Section <br />VIII, Paragraph C.3 "Public Buildings", of the City's Zoning Ordinance to allow <br />the Police Academy to locate in the West End School Building on the east side <br />of Fourth Street. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and upon unanimous vote, Council approved a request <br />by the Southern Area Agency on Aging, Inc., for $4,980to be appropriated for <br />theCity's local match of an UMTA grant for replacement of the Agency's wheel- <br />chair-lift vehicles. Councilman McClain noted that Council had previously re- <br />quested an overall plan of tile Agency's vehicle needs and that no such overall <br />plan had yet been received. Ms. Theresa Carter, representing the Southern Area <br />Agency on Aging, reported that the original request to UMTA was for five (5) <br />wheelchair-lift vehicles, and that the Agency has since be~n approved for four <br />(4) wheelchair-lift vehicles and one (1) passenger vehicle. One of the wheel- <br />chain'lift vehicles is intended for use by the Martinsville Senior Center. She <br />further reported the present use of wheelchair transportation for seniors is <br />fourteen (14) non-ambulatory individuals per week° It has been determined that <br />there exist an additional thirteen (13) "unmet needs" or thirteen (13) indivi- <br />duals who are in need of wheelchair transportation but whoare currently not <br />being served. Councilman McClain requested that Ms. Carter provide a summary <br />of the total vehicle fleet owned by the Agency as well as a report on utiliza- <br />tion of these vehicles during the upcoming budget study sessions. <br /> <br /> <br />
