Several.Councilman praised the work of Mr. Cole and the Drug Task <br /> <br />Force. Uponmotion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council tentatively <br /> <br />approved the Drug Task Force's budget request in the amount of $17,110. <br /> <br />Council considered the budget request of $5,000 ~from the Piedmont Arts <br /> <br />...Association. Ms. Toy Cobbe, of the Association's Board of Directors, was <br />present to explain the request and to respond to questions from Council. In <br /> <br /> by Mayor .McClain,=~Ms~ Cobbe confirmed~%hat'. the <br />Association had not received a State matching grant during the current fiscal <br /> <br />year. Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council tentatively <br /> <br />approved the budget request from Piedmont Arts Association in the amount of <br /> <br />$5,000. <br /> <br />Council considered the budget request of $25,000 from the Martinsville-Henry <br />county Family Y.M.C.A. In response to a questionby Councilman Adams, Mr. <br />David DePriest, Executive Director of the Y.M.C.A., explained that the <br />organization was cooperating with the Police Department regarding training of <br />Police divers. In response to questions from Council, Mr. DePriest stated <br />that Fire and Police personnel were not entitled to free full membership at <br />the Y.M.C.A. as a result of the City's $25,000 contribution. Mr. DePriest,~ <br />however, stated that the Y.M.C.A. would be willing to work on planning a <br />fitness program for Police and Fire personnel. In response to a question by <br />Mayor McClain, Mr. DePriest stated that the Y.M.C.A. currently had 125 <br />individuals on its scholarship program and that the organization was willing <br />to work with anyone who might be interested in obtaining such a scholarshipl <br />Council asked Mr. Brown. to advise officials of the School Division ofthis <br />policy by the Y.M.C.A. so that the School officials could refer "at-risk" <br />students to~the scholarship program.
