Vice-Mayor Groden said that these changes are really an <br />effort to raise revenues on the part of Adelphia and that the public would <br />better accept a straightforward annual raise in rates rather than these types <br />of changes. Mr. Rigas stated that the proposed repackaging of services was <br />in line with the practice of area cable companies and cable companies around <br />the country. Several councilmen objected to this comparison, stating that <br />Adelphia needed to consider the needs of Martinsville customers, not <br />nationwide cable practices. <br /> <br />In response to questions by Council, Mr. Rigas said that subscribers to the <br />"broadcast service" would not get Cable News Network. Mr. Michael Mick, <br />General Manager of the local company, said that CNN has never been part of <br />the "broadcast service". <br /> <br />In response to a question by Councilman Adams, Mr. Rigas explained that no <br />governmental agency regulates Adelphia's programming, packaging, and pricing <br />practices because the Federal Communications Commission has deemed there to <br />be "effective competition" in this area. <br /> <br />Councilman Oakes expressed further disagreement with the proposed changes and <br />said that Adelphia is a public/customer service organization and needed to <br />recognize this fact if it wanted to continue to do business in the City. <br />Councilman Oakes asked Mr. Rigas to take no action until it.had conducted <br />research on what Martinsville's citizens wanted with respect to cable <br /> <br /> <br />
