Councilman Williams expressed concern that <br />students may have an incentive to not~perform well inordertobe placed in <br />such alternate programs. Ms. Brammer assured Mr. Williams that measures <br />would be taken to prevent such occurrences. Councilman Oakes, in referring <br />to planning, urged that the School Board place emphasis on providing teachers <br />with motivational and leadership training. <br /> <br />The ~ext..item consideredlwas asbestos abatement. Member Martin,.Chairman <br />Carter and Mr.'Lester stated that recent developments with respect to E.P.A. <br />regulations would not have an effect on the asbestos removal program for the <br />School System. Mr. Easter noted that the Schools have in place'a management <br />plan that the System is bound by under Federal law. Member Martin stated <br />that the entire asbestos abatement project should be completed at a cost of <br /> <br />approximately $1million. <br /> <br />The next item considered was Transportation. <br />the School Board had made no decision <br /> <br /> Chairman= Carterexplainedthat <br />regarding the. feasibilit~ of <br /> <br />implementing a joint pupil transportation system with the Henry county School <br />System. <br /> <br />In response to a request by the School Board that Council join them for a <br />tour of School facilities, .Council requested that the City Manager work with <br />the Superintendent of Schools to schedule such a tour in January, 1991. <br />Chairman Carter said that he hoped the tour would last for an entire. day and <br />would include a visit to all schools. <br /> <br />Councils. considered a report from the Multi-Purpose Building Committee in <br />which=the.Committee recommended that: (1) the concept of a multi-purpose <br />building involving the Martinsville High School be discontinued; (~) the <br /> <br /> <br />
