In response to a question by <br />Councilman Oakes, Dr. Nelson said that the two incidents of violence were <br />significantly different from one another. 'Mr. Bill Lester, Director of <br />Facilities for the School System, reviewed the plans for improved lighting at <br />the High School. In response to a question by Vice'Mayor Groden, Dr. Nelson <br />stated that the Schools would move in conjunction .with the City Police <br /> <br />DePartmen~"I'~'in"~]punishing the students involved in <br /> ~h'e i'nciden~'S 6~ vi01ence~ <br /> <br />In returning to section. 4 of the notebook, Councilman Adams inquired about <br />programs for gifted or advanced placement students. Mr. Rolen then reviewed <br /> <br />~the current efforts of the School System in serving these students noting <br /> ..... , <br /> <br />that programs for these students exist at all grade levels-. Councilman Adams <br />urged the School Board to continue its emphasis on these type of programs. <br /> <br />Section 5 of the notebook contained a testing report for the 198-9-90 school <br /> <br />year. <br /> <br />Mr. Rol'en and other Schoolofficials reviewed the testing program for <br /> <br />the Schools. <br /> <br />Section.6 of the notebook focused on priorities and planning. 'Mr. Lamm noted <br />the major capital improvement.~needs of the Schools as follows: (1) renovate <br />and-upgrade'Martinsvi~lle Junior High School; -(2) renovate and upgrade the <br />elementary schools; and (3) provide additional physical education facilities <br />at Martinsville High-School, including the possible construction of a <br />spectator" gym. The major instructional improvements were listed as {!.) <br />expand the computer program K-12; (2) implement an effective alternate <br />education program; (3) create new remedial education programs;-.(4) t-rain all <br />instructional staff in Teacher Effectiveness Training; '(5) create new <br />programs for gifted students; and (6) restructure Vocational Programs. <br />Councilman Adams commended the Schools for their emphasis on planning <br /> <br /> <br />
