..!,~U~SDAY~ NOVEMBER 20. 1990 <br /> <br /> -courses have no room on their schedules to take computer, science courses. <br /> School officials responded that the supplemental appropriation request would <br /> provide for a computer lab which would allow for computer training in various <br /> courses. In response to a question by Councilman Williams, Dr. Nelson stated <br /> that the High School is offering a Math Sequence which offers practical <br /> mathematical training. In response to a question by Councilman Oakes, Ms. <br /> Brammer stated that School officials were hopeful that the Head Start program <br /> would be funded for the City Schools. Vice-Chairman Edwards said that if the <br /> program is funded, such funds would not~be available until after January 1, <br /> 1991. In response to a question by Councilman Oakes, Mr. Rolen said that the <br /> 9% dropout rate for 1989-90 was partially a result of a new compulsory <br /> attendance law which took effect July 1, 1990 raising the dropout age to 18. <br /> Councilman Oakes said that the dropout prevention program is a key program <br /> for the Schools, as it has an impact on the problems of crime which the <br /> community is experiencing° In response to a question by Councilman Adams, <br /> Mr. Rolen said that 413 students were enrolled in various special education <br /> programs. <br /> <br />The next item considered was Security/Discipline. Mr. Lamm reviewed two <br />recent incidents involving violence at School functions and the Schools' <br />plans to prevent such incidents in the future. Dr. Nelson then read a <br />prepared statement which had earlier been presented to the School Board <br />reviewing the actions which the Schools had initiated in response to the <br />problems. Councilman Williams stated that 'he had been asked by the members <br />of the Men's Roundtable Club to convey to Dr. Nelson an offer to assist in <br />any way possible with these problems° Dr. Nelson said that this is the type <br />of response that the Schools need from the community and that the offer would <br />be seriously considered. In response. to a suggestion by Councilman Adams, <br />Dr. Nelson said that the City Electric Department would be consulted as to <br /> <br /> <br />
