WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15, 1992 <br />Several members of Council expressed an interest in the "drown- <br />proofing" program being restored to the budget, stating that they felt <br />it was very valuable and that the YMCA was willing to work.with the <br />School Division to resolve any scheduling problems. <br /> <br />The following comments were made by members of the School Board: (1) <br />J.A. "Sonny" Dykes stated that he felt the proposed teacher salary <br />increases were necessary to fund a "world class" education and that <br />they would help in recruiting teachers. Mr. Dykes said that citizens <br />understood that tax increases may be~necessary to fund the salary <br />increases, but they still supported them. (2) James Johnson, Jr. <br />stated that he felt it was deplorable that Martinsville was ranked 56th <br />in the State in teacher salaries. ~ <br /> <br />There being no other comments from School Board members, the Mayor <br />opened the meeting for comments from members of the audience. <br /> <br />Mr. Lafayette Jones, 501 Second Street, asked about the criteria for <br />entry into the Head Start Program. The Mayor referred Mr. Jones to the <br />School Administration for an answer to his specific question. <br /> <br />Dr. Sinclair J. (Sandy) Harcus, Jr.,l 1116 Plantation Road, Henry <br />County, stating that he had two children enrolled in Martinsville <br />Schools, spoke in support of the School Board's proposed budget and the <br />proposed pay raise for teachers. ~ <br /> <br />Ms. Susan Selman, 1233 Lanier Road;Ms. Margaret Varn, 714 Corn Tassel <br />Trail; and Ms. Donna Gerlach, 11"12 Highland Avenue, appeared and <br />presented hundreds of letters in support of the School Board budget <br /> <br /> <br />
