TUESDAY, JULY 27, 1993 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council approved, on <br />first reading, Ordinance No. 93-13 amending Chapter 13"Offenses'- <br />Miscellaneous, Section 13-18--Sexual Solicitation or Harassment, and <br />Section 13-24--Peeping Toms, of the City Code. Mr. Smith explained <br />that adoption of the Ordinance would bring these sections of the City <br />Code into full compliance with State statutes. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the <br />following Resolution endorsing a request to the Commonwealth <br />Transportation Board by the Virginia Museum of Natural History to <br />establish a project for the Route 58 Highway Interpretive Program: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of Natural History and other State <br />agencies, on behalf of the Secretary of Natural Resources, will be <br />submitting to the Commonwealth Transportation Board a proposal <br />requesting funding over a two-year period for the planning and <br />development of a Traveler's Information System--a Talking Highway-- <br />consisting of devices which transmit messages interpreting Virginia's <br />natural and historic resources along the 508-mile length of Route 58 <br />from the Cumberland Gap to Virginia Beach; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, such a project would enhance travel along the Route 58 <br />corridor and the resulting increase in tourism revenues, appreciation <br />of the natural and historical resources of the area, and economic <br />growth potential for communities along Route 58; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in accordance with the Commonwealth Transportation Board <br />construction allocation procedures, it is necessary that a request by <br />resolution be received from the local government endorsing this project <br />in order that the Virginia Department of Transportation program approve <br />the Route 58 Highway Interpretive Program in the City of Martinsville; <br />now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled July 27, 1993, that it does hereby endorse <br />this project and requests the Commonwealth Transportation Board to <br />establish a project for the Route 58 Highway Interpretive Program; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Martinsville <br />requests that the Virginia Museum of Natural History, the Department of <br />Game and Inland Fisheries, the Department of Conservation and <br />Recreation, and the Department of Historic Resources agree to pay <br />twenty (20) percent of the total cost of planning and design, right-of- <br />way, and construction of this project, and that, if the agencies <br />participating in the project subsequently elect to cancel this project, <br />the Council of the City of Martinsville requests said agencies agree to <br />reimburse the Virginia Department of Transportation for the total <br /> <br /> <br />
