TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 27. 1994 <br />the payment of expenses relating to real property involving the <br />operation of the organization. Councilman Teague disclosed that he was <br />involved with an organization which operates bingo games in Henry <br />County, but that after consultation with the City Attorney, he believed <br />no conflict of interest existed which would prevent him from <br />participating in the discussion or vote on these Ordinances. Upon <br />motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council approved Ordinance <br />94-10 on first reading. Also upon motion, duly seconded and by <br />unanimous vote, Council approved Ordinance 94-11 on first reading. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the <br />following Resolution: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville, Virginia, leased the property <br />located at 1001 Douglas Avenue in the City to The Boaz Foundation for <br />the operation of a museum of natural history in 1984; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville, in good faith, deeded said property <br />to The Boaz Foundation in 1986 for the continued use of the facility as <br />a museum; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, The Boaz Foundation became a State-funded agency known as the <br />Virginia Museum of Natural History in 1988; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of Natural History is recognized for its <br />quality research, educational programs, and exhibits for all of <br />Virginia; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of Natural History was awarded the highest <br />honor a museum can receive when accredited by the American Association <br />of Museums in July 1994, certifying that it operates according to the <br />highest standards set forth by the museum profession, manages its <br />collections responsibly, and provides quality service to the public, an <br />honor that less than two percent of museums nationwide receive; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of Natural History makes a considerable <br />contribution to the cultural life of Martinsville and Henry County as <br />well as other areas of the State; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the location of the Museum in the Martinsville-Henry County <br />area provides an opportunity for other people to visit our community, <br />which enhances the local economy; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled September 27, 1994, that it does hereby <br />endorse (1) the continued State agency status of the Virginia Museum of <br /> <br /> <br />
