TUESDAY, MAY 23. 1995 <br /> <br />when a huge fire destroyed what used to be the American Furniture <br />Company. plant on Starling Avenue; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a number of small businesses which occupied the destructed <br />premises have suffered economic injury as a result of said disaster and <br />are in need of financial assistance that is not available on reasonable <br />terms in this area; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled May 23, 1995, that, pursuant to the <br />provisions of 15 U.S.C.S. Section 636(b)(2)(D) that the Governor of <br />Virginia be, and he hereby is, requested to certify the foregoing to <br />the Small Business Administration so that said Administration may make <br />such loans as would have been available if a disaster declaration had <br />been issued pursuant to the provisions of 15 U.S.C.S. Section 636 <br />(b)2A, B, and C; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of Council be, and he hereby is, <br />directed to furnish the Governor of Virginia with a certified copy of <br />this resolution. <br /> <br />Also under Business From the Floor, Robert Humkey, speaking on behalf <br />of the Community in Transition group, noted several events which were <br />being held in conjunction with local Industry Appreciation Week. <br /> <br />Council considered a request by the City Administration to rezone City- <br />owned property located on Clearview Drive, from R-9 Residential to B-1 <br />Business. It was noted a joint public hearing with the Planning <br />Commission had been held on this request during the May 9, 1995 meeting <br />of City Council. The Planning Commission, at their May 18, 1995 <br />meeting, recommended approval of the rezoning. Community Development <br />Coordinator Tom Harned stated no comments in opposition to the rezoning <br />were voiced during the Planning Commission meeting. Upon motion, duly <br />seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the following <br />Ordinance: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia in regular session assembled this twenty-third day <br />of May, 1995, that the Zoning Map of the City of <br />Martinsville, Virginia, be--and is hereby--amended to the <br />extent that Section 14, Block 1, Lot 1, on the Tax Map of the <br />City of Martinsville is hereby rezoned from R-9 Residential <br />to B-1 Business. <br /> <br /> <br />
