TUESDAY, JANUARY 10,.1995 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Planning District Commission provides not only service at <br />the local and regional level but also to agencies of the Commonwealth <br />of Virginia including but not limited to the Departments of Economic <br />Development, Housing and Community Development, Transportation, <br />Environmental Quality, Rehabilitative Services, and Conservation and <br />Recreation as well as Governor Allen's Region 10 Economic Development <br />Advisory Council; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS; the Planning District Commi~ssion serves as a State Data <br />Affiliate Center in conjunction with the' Virginia Employment Com- <br />mission's State Data Center Program Which has enabled VEC to meet the <br />needs of thousands of data users throughout Virginia and the nation; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Planning District Commission received U.S. Department of <br />Commerce, Economic Development Administration, designation as an <br />Economic Development District in June 1992 and subsequently has <br />prepared successful grant applications which have brought over $2.5 <br />million in federal funds to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the <br />purpose of generating jobs for Virginians in our region; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, we wish the Planning District Commission to continue its good <br />efforts in serving the national, state, and local community, in <br />particular the regional community including its members the Counties of <br />Franklin, Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, and the Cities of Danville and <br />Martinsville, and Town of Rocky Mount; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Cityof Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled January 10, 1995, that it does hereby express <br />its continued support for the Planning District Commission and its <br />activities in support of the United States, Commonwealthof Virginia, <br />member local governments, and citizens; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Council does hereby encourage the <br />Virginia General Assembly to restore funds to the Commonwealth's budget <br />for the West Piedmont Planning District Commission and other Planning <br />District Commission and further encourages the Governor and other <br />entities--federal, state, and local--to work with Planning Districts <br />regarding financial and program support and partnerships in the future. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council set a public <br />hearing for January 24, 1995 on a request by The Lester Group to rezone <br />Lot 1R on the south side of Commonwealth Boulevard, due west and <br />ad3acent to the Virginia National Guard Armory, from R-6 Residential to <br />C-3 Commercial. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council approved the <br />1995 Virginia Community Development Block Grant Priorities for the <br />City.
