TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1995 <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution supporting the Centerstate <br />29 tourism program brochure and appropriating 81,500 to participate in <br />the brochure. Tom Harned, Asst. to the City Manager for Development, <br />explained that special attractions in Martinsville would be listed in <br />the brochure should Council decide to participate. The brochure is a <br />publication of communities located along the Route 29 corridor designed <br />to enhance tourism opportunities in this area. Upon motion, duly <br />seconded and by unanimous vote, Council adopted the following <br />Resolution and approved a supplemental appropriation of $1,500 to be <br />taken from the General Fund Industrial Development Reserve: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Senator Charles Hawkins (Chatham) and Delegate Joyce Crouch <br />(Lynchburg) are leading a group supported with members from Chambers of <br />Commerce, local governments, etc. in an effort to promote tourism along <br />U.S. 29 in the Commonwealth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the U.S. 29 Corridor comes through the West Piedmont Planning <br />District; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville and the County of Henry are included <br />within the Corridor Map being developed for this project; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville is desirous of promoting tourism and <br />visitors to the Martinsville-Henry County area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City has been invited to participate in the Centerstate 29 <br />Scenic Alternatives tourism brochure being developed; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />that it does hereby endorse the tourism promotional efforts of the <br />Centerstate 29 Scenic Alternatives and will contribute its pro-rata <br />share of publication costs related to the project not to exceed 81,500. <br /> <br />Council considered a request from the Sheriff for a supplemental <br />appropriation to the Jail budget for part-time employees. Sheriff <br />Steve Draper explained that due to the over-population of the City Jail <br />and turn-over of female part-time correctional officers, monies <br />designated for part-time salaries were not sufficient to last until the <br />end of the fiscal year. Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous <br />vote, Council approved a supplemental appropriation in the amount of <br /> <br /> <br />
