TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1995 <br /> <br />After the invocation, followed by Mayor Adams' cordial welcome to <br />visitors present, Council approved the minutes of its October 12, 1995 <br />meeting as amended. <br /> <br />Under Business from the Floor, Bruce Dallas, 211 <br />requested increased Police patrols on Massey Street. <br /> <br />Massey Street, <br /> <br />Council recognized the Fire Department for receiving First Responder <br />Certification. Fire Chief W. Lewis Reeves stated that as of September <br />1, 1995, the Fire Department was certified as a First Responder Agency. <br />Beginning November 1, 1995, the Department will respond simultaneously <br />with the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad to all life-threatening <br />calls within the City limits. The Department will not provide <br />transportation of patients. Previously, the Department had been <br />available to the Rescue Squad on a mutual aid basis. In response to a <br />question from a member of Council, Chief Reeves estimated the <br />Department's call volume would increase 200% as a result of the First <br />Responder program. The Chief recognized several members of the Fire <br />Department who were in attendance as having received Emergency Medical <br />Technician status. City Manager Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. expressed <br />appreciation to Chief Reeves and Asst. Chief Jerry Brock for their work <br />on the Public Safety Strategic Plan, of which the First Responder <br />program is a part. All members of Council expressed appreciation to <br />the Fire Department for their efforts in achieving this status. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of the 1994 Award of Merit for Pedestrian <br />Protection received from the American Automobile Association. Chief of <br />Police Terry L. Roop was present to explain the role of the <br />Transportation Safety Commission in achieving this award. <br /> <br /> <br />
