148 <br /> TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 22, 1998 <br /> <br /> improvements to the nearby streets and intersections, and a proposed shell building to be constructed in the <br /> <br /> park. Council Member Haskell asked if the park had been shown to any business prospects, and was told that <br /> it had received several enthusiastic responses. Mr. Lafayette Jones asked if the names of the prospects could <br /> be revealed and was told that they could not he at this time. Mr. Harned then reviewed the agenda for the <br /> upcoming Virginia Department of Transportation Public Information meeting on road and street <br /> improvements to he done related to the project, to he held on September 29, 199S, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM <br /> at Clearview Elementary School. Mr. Harned then discussed the new Jamison Inn hotel being constructed on <br /> a site on Commonwealth Boulevard, and noted that the City had helped to Facilitate the development of the <br /> selected site hy providing a new twelve inch water line to serve the property. Council Member Haskell stated <br /> that she was pleased that the developers of this project had referred to the Martinsville-Henry County area as <br /> a growth area when discussing the project in the newspaper. Mayor Crabtree noted that the City's <br /> investments in development of the City were paying off. Mr. Reynolds then reminded Council that, in context <br /> with their discussions on development of the Clearview property, Council would be visiting a shell building in <br /> Botetourt County on October 6 th while attending the Virginia Municipal League Conference in P-oanoke. <br /> <br />Next Dr. Ira Trollinger, Superintendent of Schools, provided a progress report on improvements being made <br />to school facilities. He stated that school personnel had been very busy within the past several months, having <br />moved their administrative offices to very nice space in the former Sara Lee Knit Products plant while their <br />offices in the Albert Harris School were being renovated. He stated that the construction drawings for the <br />Albert Harris project would be ready by the end of October, and that the project should go out to bid shortly <br />thereafter. He went on to discuss improvements at Patrick Henry and Cleandew Elementary Schools, and <br />expressed his appreciation for the work that Mr. Bill Lester, his Maintenance staff and the teaching personnel <br />had done to make this work successful. Dr. Trollinger stated that the $1 million they had used for these <br />improvements had been made to go a long way, and that although they had identified over $5 million in <br />needed improvements this was an excellent start.
