TUESDAY, JUNE 23, 1998 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the consulting team retained by the Virginia Department of Transportation is well into the <br />planning and location studies for Interstate 73 from North Carolina into the Roanoke Area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this work has been underway for about one year and over the course of the next year, a rome <br />for this highway is to be recommended to the Commonwealth Transportation Board; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the location of Interstate 73 in the Martinsville/Hemy County area would be an asset for <br />economic development and expansion of tourism, thus provide for a better quality-of-life for our citizens; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the location of a Welcome Center upon entering Virginia from North Carolina would inform <br />travelers of the various points of interest in our great Commonwealth, as well as the Martinsville/Henry <br />County area; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session assembled June <br />23, 1998, that it does hereby request the Virginia Department of Transportation to support the development <br />of, and does hereby request the consulting team retained by the Virginia Department of Transportation to <br />consider the development of a Welcome Center on Interstate 73 on the Virginia side of the Virginia/North <br />Carolina border and make this reconmaendation to the Commonwealth Transportation Board. <br /> <br />Next on Council's agenda was approval, on first reading, of Ordinance No. 98-7 mending Chapter 2- <br />Administration, Article VII--Planning Commission, Section 2-105--Created; composition; appointment etc., <br />of members, Subsection (a) of the City Code related to the number of planning Commission members. <br /> <br />City Manager Reynolds stated that staff's recommendation under this action was to reduce the number of <br />members of the Planning Commission from 9 to 7 members, in order to better enable the Commission to act <br />effectively, and provide a composition more in keeping with other such bodies within the Commonwealth. <br />Council Member Haskell noted that since there were only 7 members appointed at present no member would <br />have to be eliminated. Council Member Teague stated that he would like Council to hold a Public Hearing on <br />this issue at the next Council Meeting, prior to final action, in order to hear public opinion on the matter. <br />-Upon motion duly seconded, and by unanimous vote, Council adopted this amendment to the City Code on <br />first reading. <br /> <br /> <br />
