TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1997 <br /> <br />Executive Session for the purpose of discussing the following matters: (A) Possible acquisition of property for <br /> <br />public use, as authorized by Subsection 3. <br /> <br />At the conclusion of this Executive Session, each member of Council certified that (1) only public business <br />matters exempt from open meeting requirements were discussed in said executive session; and (2) only those <br />business matters identified ~'n the motion Cbnvening the Executive' Session were heard, discussed, or <br />eonsider~a' during said Session". <br /> <br />Upon their return to open meeting Council took the following action: Upon motion duly seconded, and by <br />unanimous vote, Councilmember Teague having abstained due to conflict of interest; Council agreed to accept <br />a donation of land and property, valued at $455,000 from the Tultex Corporation. The property, located in <br />Uptown Martinsville and bounded by East Church Street, Moss Street, Fayette Street, and Market Street, was <br />given as a giet to the City for public purposes consistent with the purposes of the Martinsville Redevelopment <br />and Housing Authority. Ms. Kathy H. Rogers, of Tultex Corporation, was present to execute the deed on <br />behalf of Tultex. Ms. Rogers stated that she was delighted to be present to make the presentation, and that <br />the City fathers were demonstrating real vision by their acceptance of the property and their intention to <br />redevelop same. Councilmember Haskell then asked Tom Harned, Assistant to the City Manager for <br />Development, to describe the property and its boundaries, which he proceeded to do. Mrs. Haskell then <br />stated that this action marked one more step in the City' s continuing process of reinventing itself. Vice- <br />Mayor Crabtree pledged that the City would do well by the property. <br /> <br />Council next considered Business from the Floor. Sheriff Steve Draper came forward to report on the recent <br />efforts of a team from the City which attended a training course held in Longmont, Colorado by the National <br />Institute of Corrections, titled Planning of New Institutions, or PONI. Those who attended included Sheriff <br />Draper, Administrative Officer Laura Hopkins, and Jail Administrator Bart Hampton, from the Sheriff's <br /> <br /> <br />
