TUESDAY, AUGUST 264 1997 <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular session assembled August 26, <br />1997, that it does hereby recognize Mr. Herbert O. Hughes' retirement from 32 years of service with the City by <br />designating Southside Park as the "Southside Park - Herbert O. Hughes Complex"; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTIllER RESOLVED by said Council that it wishes Herb and his wife, Hazel, a healthy and happy <br />retirement. <br /> ****** <br /> <br />Mr. Herbert O. Hughes then came forward to express his gratitude to the City Council, the Recreation <br />Association, and the citizens of Martinsville for the honor bestowed upon him. Mayor Adams and City <br />Manager Earl Reynolds then took action to further honor and express appreciation to Mr. Hughes for his <br />contribution to the betterment of the community and its Parks and Recreation programs. Mayor Adams <br />awarded Mr. Hughes an honorary Key to the City, and City Manager Reynolds then presented to Mr. <br />Hughes a special plaque, which held a framed original of Mr. Hughes first letter of employment from the <br />City of Martinsville, signed by then City Manager Julian Hirst. Following these presentations all members of <br />Council extended their congratulations and appreciation to Mr. Hughes, who then received a standing ovation <br />from all present. Mr. Hughes once again thanked City Council and the members of the Recreation <br />Association, as well as the many staff and volunteers who had assisted him over the years. <br /> <br /> Under further Business from the Floor, Mr. Tom Hamed, Assistant to the City Manager for Development, <br /> came forward to present a news release from Senator John Warner's office announcing the award to the City <br /> of Martinsville of a $700,000 Federal EDA Grant for the development of the Clearview Business Park. <br /> Councilmember Haskell, in congratulating Mr. Harned, stated that the process on the Grant had moved along <br /> <br />~-,,. well, and Vice-Mayor Crabtree agreed, citing the fact that Mr. Hamed had identified the site in 1994 and <br /> made good progress in pursuing funds to develop the site. It was noted that these funds, in conjunction with <br /> $450,000 from the Virginia Department of Transportation, and $728,000 in funds from the City, will now <br /> enable the City to accomplish road access, site work, and utilities to serve the Park. When asked by <br /> Councilmember Haskell about the schedule for the work to be done, Mr. Harned responded that ground <br /> <br /> <br />
