TUESDAY, 3ULY 8,1997 <br /> <br />of the Commission and the efforts which had resulted in achievement of <br /> <br />the award, and mentioned particularly the Bike Rodeo and the fact that <br />Martinsville had won runner up in the State for its outstanding bike <br />safety program last year. He then presented the award plaque to City <br />Council, noting that this was the fourth one that they had been <br />awarded. Council then recognized the hard work and achievement of the <br />Martinsville Transportation Safety Commission, and the Mayor expressed <br />Councit's appreciation for the Commission's successful work in <br />protecting the citizens of the community. <br /> <br />Consideration was then given by Council to a report from Mr. Bud Oakey, <br />of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce, who presented information <br />from a Study on the Future of Transportation in Southwestern and <br />Southside Virginia, prepared by the Roanoke Regional Chamber of <br />Commerce and the Regional Transportation Committee. Mr. Oakey <br />described the work of the Committee, the elements of the plan, the <br />long-term transportation needs of the region, as noted in the study <br />report, and the legislative efforts felt necessary to accomplish the <br />objectives of the Study. Mr. Oakey then expressed his appreciation for <br />the hard work and able assistance of Delegate Ward Armstrong, Tom <br />Harned, Assistant to the City Manager for Development, George Lester, <br />Bob Dowd, and other members of the Committee. Following further <br />discussion by City Council of possible follow-up efforts to support the <br />findings of the Study, a motion was made, duly seconded and unanimously <br />approved to endorse the Study on the Future of Transportation in <br />Southwest and Southside Virginia, with exception of the recommendation <br /> <br /> <br />
