TUESDAY, APRIL22, 1997 <br />opposing), Council reduced the line item for the City Newsletter by <br />85,500. <br /> <br />l'4a <br /> <br />Mayor Adams made a motion that 850,000 be eliminated from the budget in <br />the line item funding the Finance Department hand-held meter reading <br />device upgrade, with the understanding that the City Administration <br />could return to Council with this request in the event the current <br />system failed. This motion died for lack of a second. Upon motion, <br />duly seconded and bya vote of 4-1 (Mayor Adams opposing), Council left <br />funding for the hand-held meter reading devices in the budget. <br /> <br />In response to a question from a Council member, Mr. Reynolds stated <br />the funding contained in his budget proposal for the City/County Social <br />Services Department was an estimate because the new Joint Board has not <br />adopted a budget for the next fiscal year. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council accepted the <br />increase in the Fire Department budget as proposed by the City Manager. <br />Council Member Haskell stated she would support funding of the three <br />firefighter positions which were originally requested if the City <br />Manager would commit to no net increase in overall City employees. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council eliminated <br />$10,000 contained in the Engineering Division budget that was budgeted <br />twice for the Spruce Street/Sprucedale/Brookdale Road intersection <br />traffic study. <br /> <br />In reviewing the budget for the Commonwealth's Attorney, Council Member <br />Teague noted that funds had been included for a new position, however, <br /> <br /> <br />
