TUESDAY, JANUARY 14, 1997
Council considered adoption, on second reading, of Ordinance No. 96-15
amending Taxicab Rates as contained in the City Code. In response to
a question from Council Member Crabtree, Mr. Reynolds stated the only
public comment he had received on this matter was an unsigned letter in
which complaints were made regarding the general condition of taxicabs
in the City. Council Member Haskell noted she had received a call from
a resident who stated the increased fares would be a financial burden
to her. In response to a question from Lafayette Jones, 501 Second
Street, City Manager Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. stated that the
Administration had not conducted a study of the feasibility of
implementing public bus transportation in the City. Upon motion, duly
seconded and by a vote of 4 "yes" and 1 "abstain" (Council Member
Dallas due to his friendship with individuals associated with the
Yellow Cab Company), the following Ordinance No. 96-15 was adopted on
second reading:

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in
regular session assembled January 14, 1997, that it does hereby amend
Chapter 22--Vehicles for Hire, Article II--Taxicabs and For-Hire Cars,
Division 5--Fares, Section 22-85--Taxicab Rates, Subsection (a) of the
City Code, as follows:

Sec. 22-85.
