TUESDAY. DECEMBER 10, 1996 <br />Reynolds stated that an Associate Planner position would be created to <br />work under the Planning, Zoning and Housing Manager. <br /> <br />45 <br /> <br />Council conducted a public hearing on a request by the Yellow Cab <br />Company to increase taxicab fares. Creed Taylor, Accountant for Yellow <br />Cab Company, presented a written analysis of the effect of the increase <br />on typical taxicab trips within the City. Mr. Taylor stated he was <br />unable to obtain information on proposed increases in the City of <br />Danville's taxicab rates because that information had not yet been made <br />public. Alexis Lee, a citizen, stated the public may be shocked at a <br />sudden increase in taxicab fares. There being no other comments, Mayor <br />Adams declared the public hearing closed. Upon motion, duly seconded <br />and by a vote of 4 "yes" and 1 "abstain" (Council Member Dallas due to <br />his friendship with individuals associated with the Yellow Cab <br />Company), Council approved, on first reading, Ordinance No. 96-15, <br />which would increase taxicab fares in the City. <br /> <br />Council considered adoption of a Resolution establishing and agreeing <br />to participate in the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training <br />Academy, to be located in Martinsville. Chief of Police David Edwards <br />said the localities in Zone III of the New River Criminal Justice <br />Training Academy, which include the Counties of Patrick, Henry and <br />Pittsylvania as well as the Cities of Martinsville and Danville, have <br />experienced difficulties with obtaining the necessary training within <br />reasonable travel distances. All dispatcher training by the Academy is <br />done in Radford and the Police Department has sent sixteen officers out <br />of the area for specialized training that was not offered in the <br />Martinsville office of the Academy. Chief Edwards stated it was hoped <br />that State funding would be provided for the new Academy. The <br /> <br /> <br />
