TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1996 <br /> <br />Cloverdale-Wyoming 765 kV transmission line pro3ect to provide needed <br />electric capacity to serve Appalachian's Central and Eastern Regions; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville, Virginia, which owns and operates <br />its own electric system serving eight thousand one hundred and fifty <br />(8,150) customers in an area of approximately eleven (11) square miles, <br />purchases one hundred percent (100%) of its wholesale electric needs <br />over these Appalachian Power Company transmission facilities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Appalachian Power Company provides retail electric service to <br />a number of significant industrial customers within the City of <br />Martinsville; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the availability of reliable and reasonably priced electricity <br />is essential to the social and economic well being of Martinsville, as <br />well as other areas served by Appalachian Power Company; now, <br />therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City'of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular session assembled October 8, 1996, that it does hereby express <br />its support that a reliable electrical transmission system for <br />Martinsville be provided; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that the Clerk of Council, Lance <br />G. Heater, be, and he hereby is, directed to forward a copy of this <br />Resolution to the U.S. Forest Service. <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and by unanimous vote, Council authorized <br />the Mayor to sign a letter designating the Martinsville Social Services <br />Department to administer the Set-Off Debt Collection Program for Food <br />Stamp and Aid to Families with Dependent Children programs. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged a report from City Manager Earl B. Reynolds, Jr. <br />on Staff follow-up to citizens' concerns expressed during the September <br />24, 1996 Neighborhood Town Meeting at Albert Harris School. Chief <br />Edwards provided an update on research he had conducted regarding the <br />declaration of property as a common nuisance. Public Works Director <br />Leon Towarnicki discussed the Staff's investigation of storm drainage <br />problems on South Beaver Street. Finally, Mr. Reynolds stated the <br />issue of providing the Senior Citizens' van for transportation to <br />public meetings could be placed in the citizens' survey to determine <br />whether there was sufficient public interest in this matter. <br /> <br /> <br />
