<br />3t <br /> <br />'APRIL 12, 1955 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />Mayor Hodnett, on behalf of Council and the citizens of l.Iartinsville, accepted through <br /> <br />Fire Marshal Clay Easterly an award from the National Fire P:"'otection Association <br /> <br />indicating that Martinsville, in competition with all other cities throughout the <br /> <br />United States, for the year 1954 was adjudged first-place ar.long all cities in its <br /> <br />class (Class 6); first place among all cities of Virginia and tenth place among all <br /> <br />cities in the United States, regardless of size. Mayor IIoclnett then presented <br /> <br />--- <br /> <br />diplomas to a number of members of the local Volunteer Firo Company ,.ho have successfully <br /> <br />completed training courses through the Volu.nteer Fire Company. <br /> <br />An item on the agenda regarding a proposal to improve the City's airport property <br /> <br />landing strip was continued at the request of Attorney R. R. Young, Jr., counsel for <br /> <br />a group of citizens \'.110 have indicated an interest in this matter. <br /> <br />~~~ <br />o~ <br />~~ <br />i <br /> <br />In response to a request from members of the local Touchdm-rn Club, whose spokesman <br /> <br />was Attorney W. R. Broaddus, III, Council authorized City Manager Mathewson to lease <br /> <br />on a year-to-year basis the City's new concession stand at Bravm Street Field to <br /> <br />enable the Touchdown Club raise funds (approximately ~pl,OOO.OO) to pay tne balance <br /> <br />of the cost of liGhting Brown Street Field. <br /> <br />After revievring City tax maps on which Memorial Boulevard properties oVI'Ded by the <br /> <br />City had been superim~)osed, Council authorized City M2nager ILathewson to contact Mr. <br /> <br />Brooks R. Leavitt, the City's right-of-way ac,ent. for Hemorial Boulevard property <br /> <br />acquisition, to determine if Mr. Leavitt would act as ?,eal Estate Agent for the City <br /> <br />and, as such, maintain an inventory of these properJ0ies, negotiate rentals on <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />properties to be rented, and negotiate sales for properties the City might decide <br /> <br />to sell. <br />
