<br />~8 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />SEPTm1BER 28. 1954 <br /> <br />On second and final reading Council adopted the ordinance (see insert) <br /> <br /> <br />granting Rapid Transit Company, Inc. the exclusive right to operate <br /> <br /> <br />busses for the transportation of passengers on the streets and highways <br /> <br />of the City of Martinsville, as placed on first reading September 14, <br /> <br /> <br />1954, and in so doing granted a franchise for this purpose to said <br /> <br /> <br />Rapid Transit Company, Inc. <br /> <br />Upon receipt of a request for the closing and vacating of Rock Street, <br /> <br /> <br />which request was presented by Lester Ltmlber Company, Inc. through its <br /> <br /> <br />counsel (Attorney John Epperly), Council referred said request to the <br /> <br />City Planning Commission for its consideration and recommendation. <br /> <br />By letter dated September 24, 1954 the Martinsville Junior Chamber of <br /> <br /> <br />Commerce expressed its appreciation of Council's assistance in helping <br /> <br /> <br />make the Jaycees' First Annual Tobacco Festival a success. <br /> <br />A request from the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company for permission <br /> <br /> <br />to locate and build a cottage for the Fire Company's use on City property <br /> <br />at the new water impounding reservoir was referred to City Manager <br /> <br />~futhewson for study and recommendations. <br /> <br />By official notice given by the State Corporation Commission Council was <br /> <br /> <br />advised of a public hearing to be conducted by the Commission in Richmond, <br /> <br /> <br />Virginia on October 25, 1954 on an application ~J Rapid Transit Company, Inc., <br /> <br />Martinsville, Virginia, for a certificate as a common carrier of passengers <br /> <br />over Route 57 between Martinsville and Chatham, Virginia. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />rk of Council <br />
