<br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 28. 1954 <br /> <br />,---" <br /> <br />In considering the report and recommendations presented to Council on <br /> <br />September 14, 1954 by a special committee, relating to proposed rules <br /> <br />and regulations governing the recreational usage of the City's new water <br /> <br />impounding reservoir property, Council accepted said report and <br /> <br />recommendations and referred same to City Attorney stone for preparation <br /> <br />of a proposed ordinance incorporating these recommendations. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />By resolution, as follows, Council assigned the name ltHemorial Boulevard" <br /> <br />to the new Route 220 Thoroughfare, including the tenninal and adjoining <br /> <br />sections of both River Hill Road and Roanoke Highway to the City's corporate <br /> <br />limits on Route 220: <br /> <br />I~ <br />i~ <br />i <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville, in conjunction with the Department <br />of Highways of the Commonwealth of Virginia and with the Federal <br />Gove:mment, has just completed the construction of a distribution road <br />(heretofore called Route 220 Thoroughfare) in the City of Martinsville <br />between the intersection of West Fayette and West Church Streets on <br />Route 220 North and the intersection of Bridge and Starling Streets on <br />Route 220 South; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, at and since the time the construction of this project was <br />authorized, and in keeping with the expressed wishes of the citizens <br />of Martinsville, it has been deemed appropriate that upon completion <br />of this project it be designated as a memorial to Martinsville's <br />members of the armed services who have lost their lives while serving <br />their country during the time of war; now therefore, <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />in regular meeting assembled this twenty-eighth day of September, 1954, <br />that it doth herein and hereby officially name the aforementioned <br />distribution road "Memorial Boulevard" in honor and memory of <br />Martinsville's war dead; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that the section of West Church <br />Street from the western terminus of said distribution road to the City's <br />corporate limits on Route 220 North and the section of Bridge Street <br />(or River Hill Road) from the southern terminus of said distribution <br />road to the City's corporate limits on Route 220 South be henceforth <br />named, and included as a part of "Memorial Boulevard "; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that copies of this resolution <br />be furnished the local radio and press, the local United States Post <br />Office, and such other firms and agencies requiring a copy of this <br />ordinance. <br />
