~ ~ TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 28. 1954 ,---" In considering the report and recommendations presented to Council on September 14, 1954 by a special committee, relating to proposed rules and regulations governing the recreational usage of the City's new water impounding reservoir property, Council accepted said report and recommendations and referred same to City Attorney stone for preparation of a proposed ordinance incorporating these recommendations. -- By resolution, as follows, Council assigned the name ltHemorial Boulevard" to the new Route 220 Thoroughfare, including the tenninal and adjoining sections of both River Hill Road and Roanoke Highway to the City's corporate limits on Route 220: I~ i~ i WHEREAS, the City of Martinsville, in conjunction with the Department of Highways of the Commonwealth of Virginia and with the Federal Gove:mment, has just completed the construction of a distribution road (heretofore called Route 220 Thoroughfare) in the City of Martinsville between the intersection of West Fayette and West Church Streets on Route 220 North and the intersection of Bridge and Starling Streets on Route 220 South; and WHEREAS, at and since the time the construction of this project was authorized, and in keeping with the expressed wishes of the citizens of Martinsville, it has been deemed appropriate that upon completion of this project it be designated as a memorial to Martinsville's members of the armed services who have lost their lives while serving their country during the time of war; now therefore, - BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in regular meeting assembled this twenty-eighth day of September, 1954, that it doth herein and hereby officially name the aforementioned distribution road "Memorial Boulevard" in honor and memory of Martinsville's war dead; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that the section of West Church Street from the western terminus of said distribution road to the City's corporate limits on Route 220 North and the section of Bridge Street (or River Hill Road) from the southern terminus of said distribution road to the City's corporate limits on Route 220 South be henceforth named, and included as a part of "Memorial Boulevard "; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that copies of this resolution be furnished the local radio and press, the local United States Post Office, and such other firms and agencies requiring a copy of this ordinance.
