<br />12 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MARCH 24. 1959 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council adopted the <br /> <br />following resolution tentatively committing the City for certain costs should <br /> <br />a proposed new National Guard armory be built in Martinsville: <br /> <br />WBEREAS, during the course of several conferences between members <br />of Martinsville City Council and the commanding officers of the <br />local National Guard units, considerable interest has been indicated <br />by the Council in obtaining for Mirtinsville a new armory under <br />terms and conditions presented by the aforesaid commanding <br />officers; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, as evidence of the Council's interest and efforts, a special <br />committee appointed by direction of the Council has made a study of <br />available sites deemed suitable for location of a nevT armory and now <br />desires an early review of the sites by the Adjutant General of the <br />Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia National Guard; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RES OLVED by the Council of the City of Martbsville, Virginia, <br />in regular meeting assembled this twenty-fourth day of Mirch, 1959, <br />as further evidence of its interest and efforts, that it herein expressed <br />its intention of providing at City e:Jq)ense a minimum of five (5) acres <br />of land as a site for the proposed armory and, also, e:Jq)ressed its <br />intention of appropriatL'1.g in the City's forthcoming 1959-60 budget the <br />sum of approximately twenty thousand dollars ($20,000.00) as the City's <br />estimated share of the cost of constructing the proposed armory; and <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be forwarded to <br />the Adjutant General of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Virginia National <br />Guard, and to the commanding officers of the local National Guard units. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged with appreciation the recent donation of 110 Dogwood trees by <br /> <br />the M3.rtinsville Council of Garden Clubs, which trees the City is planting on <br /> <br />certain streets, probably and eventually to replace large trees which now <br /> <br />require periodic trimming to avoid interference with electric utility lines. <br /> <br />After discussing terms and conditions of the recent Court-ordered annexing by the <br /> <br />City of territory from Henry County in the Druid Hills-Forest Park areas, Council <br /> <br />ordered made a part of these minutes the following order entered by the three-judge <br /> <br />court effecting the annexation as of January 1, 1960: <br />
