Mayers' resignation as <br /> <br />County-Gity Health Director, effective Septeml:::Jer, 1957, who will be taking a leave <br /> <br />of absence from the state Health DepartJIent to further his studies in public health <br /> <br />at Johns Hopkins University. Council went on record as thanking Dr. Mayers for his <br /> <br />fine vrork during his assooiation with the City. <br /> <br />Pointing out that the current budget provides $3,000.00 as the City's fifty-per- <br /> <br />cent share of the estimated cost of plan preparation for widening Routes 57-58 <br /> <br />from Booker Road to Bob Gregory street, City Manager Hirst reported that the state <br /> <br />Highway Department has indicated an interest in enlarging upon the scope of the <br /> <br />project to the extent of developing plans for the widening of the bridge across <br /> <br />the Carolina & Northwestern Railway right-of-way at an additional estimated cost <br /> <br />of $4,000.00 (50% of $8,000.00) to the City, although there is a possibility of <br /> <br />the Federal Government participating in the cost, in which event the City's cost <br /> <br />would be reduced to 25% of the estimated total of $14,000. Upon Mr. Hirst's <br /> <br />recommendation, Council unanimously authorized the Manager to enter into an <br /> <br />agreement with the state Highway Department providing for the developrrent of and <br /> <br />payrent for these plans, with the understanding that efforts would continue to be <br /> <br />made to obtain Federal aid as hereinbefore mentioned. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst presented to Council a report for the first six months of <br />1957, covering traffic accidents, personal injuries, fatalities, and ~operty <br />damage, noting a decrease from the corresponding period of 1956. <br /> <br />
