<br />1~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 14. 1957 <br /> <br />three-year term beginning July 1, 1957. <br /> <br />Council, too, appointed Mr. T. J. Childress, Jr., to membership on the <br />Planning Commission for an unexpired term ending July 1, 1958. <br /> <br />Council accepted Councilman C. C. Donavan tis resignation as a member of the <br /> <br />Zoning Board of Appeals, effective immediately, expressing its appreciation <br /> <br />to Mr. Donavant for his services while a member of the Board. <br /> <br />Mr. Irving M. Groves, Jr., and other members of the Martinsville Junior <br /> <br />Chamber of Commerce, presented an outline of its plans for the construction <br /> <br />of a Youth Activities Center under the supervision and operation of an <br /> <br />affiliate, viz., Jaycee Youth Activities, Inc. Council went on record as <br /> <br />.~..I' <br />, 'Co <br />:.:c <br /> <br />approving in general ter.ms the proposed plan and indicated that it will <br /> <br />cooperate insofar as practicable with the Jaycees in the operation and <br /> <br />maintenance of the Center when completed, understanding that the Center will <br /> <br />be made available to both children and adults of the City of Martinsville. <br /> <br />",,- <br /> <br />Representatives of the Martinsville-Henry County Life Saving Crew appeared <br />before Council and sWllnarily described the services being rendered by the <br /> <br />Lite Saving Crew as well as the financial problems now facing this <br /> <br />organization. A request for financial assistance from the City was received <br /> <br />and referred to City Manager Hirst for study and report at Council's next <br /> <br />regular meeting. <br /> <br />A petition submitted by a number of residents of Wilson Street, for the <br /> <br />construction on a Shared-cost basis of a sidewalk on a portion of the <br /> <br />south side of Wilson Street, was acknowledged and placed on file with similar <br /> <br />petitions for Council's study at a later date. <br />
