<br />1:: <br /> <br />1t:ESDAY <br /> <br />APRIL 9. 1957 <br /> <br />tpon being informed by City ~~Jager Hirst of the excellent cooperation and <br /> <br />most valuable assistance received by the City from many individ'l.1als and <br /> <br />agencies during the course of the Lester Lumber Company fire April 8th, <br /> <br />Council asked that an expression of its appreciation and commendation be <br /> <br />conveyed to these individuals and agencies as well as to the City Fire <br /> <br />Department, the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company, and other city <br /> <br />...,..-.. <br /> <br />departments who were directly involved with the actual fire-fighting. <br /> <br />Mr. Cary J. Randolph, Attorney at Law and President of the Martinsville- <br /> <br />Henry County Bar Association, appeared before Council and urged its <br /> <br />consideration of improving the City's Municipal Courtroom facilities, <br /> <br />CO'lmcil referred this matter to the City :Hanager. <br /> <br />~i~~ <br />liii~~ <br />~r~f <br />;lis <br />I\:F <br /> <br />tpon being informed of the new business license tax year beginning Hay <br /> <br />1st, Council decided that the license tax rates now in effect should not <br /> <br />be changed at the present ti~e. <br /> <br />Council, in accepting the following Planning Commission report and <br /> <br />recommendation, called for a public hearing on ~~e recomwendation to be <br /> <br />conducted during Council's May 14th meeting: <br /> <br />The Planning Commission of the City of Martinsville wishes to <br />acknowledge with appreciation Council's action of March 26, <br />1957 with respect to your Commjssion's recommendations of <br />March 12, 1957 in regard to setbacks along Memorial Boulevard. <br />Y01;.r Commission respects Council's position in regard to this <br />matter; however, because of certain existing conditions, your <br />Commission feels justified in making a further recommendation <br />to Council in regard to this same matter. <br /> <br />It is the understanding of the Commission that in the area <br />along Memorial Boulevard betwee..n the Old Dye Plant. Road inter- <br />section and the south corporate lim~ts thct no promise was <br />made to property owners that a setback would not be imposed. <br />The SaIne condition exists on the bovlevard between the inter- <br />section of Leaver Street and the northwest corporate llliits. <br />
