L36

TUESDAY

~J:L 9. 1957

You will note from our preViOl.1S letter of March 12 that a
10-foot setback is already in effect along the boulev~rd
between the intersection of Starling Avenue and the Old Dye
Plan t Road intersection on the south end and also on the
north end between the intersection of Feyette street and
the intersection of Beaver street. ;lith respect to Memorial
Boulevard South, your Commission submits the following
rec oo.mend at ion:

"That a 10-foot setback be imposed on both sides of Hemorial
Boulevard from the old intersection of Dye Plant Road or
Riverrnont Heights to the south corporate limits."

With respect to Memorial Boulevard North, the lack of uniformity
of right-of-way width prohibits the making of any recommendation
e. t the present time, however your Commi ssion has this area
1,;nder study.

In arriving at the above recommendation, your Commission con-
sidered the following facts:

1. That the nature of present development in this area is such
that more freedom of movement into and around these
businesses is desirable.

2. That presently this particular section of the Boulevard is
carrying approximately 14,000 automobiles per day and ac-
cording to treffic surveys this area has increased tre.ffic-
wise 62 percent over the past five years.

J. That additional sidewalk area and possibly a widening of the
traffic lanes may be necessary sometime in the future if
the present rate of traffic L~crease continues.

It is interesting to note the following facts about approximate
traffic volumes on Hemorial Boulevard in respective areas:

South corporate limits to Starling Avenue
Starling Avenue to Broad Street
Broad street to Bridge Street
Bridge street to Fayette Street
Fayette Street to Northwest corporate limits

14,000 per day
8,000 per day
6,000 per day
J,500 per day
14,000 per day

The increase on this last named area over the past five years
has been 109 percent.

The Planning Commission respectfully submits the above recom-
mendation for Council's further consideration.
