/--

M'''.''
l:i~~
" t3
I, g;
I~

,-

TUES DAY

APRIL 10, 1956

There are several streets wi thin the City limits on which there are houses
fronting and occupied t.lwt are not supplied with wat.er by the City and there
are areas within the City limits that do not have an adequ2.te supply for
domestic use and fer fire protection. If we m~e able to continue at the
present rate of extenc.ing 2.ncl im~Jroving our water system, within the next
four years we should have 2,11 of the resjdences "oj. thin the City lirnits
supplied y;ith water cmd DaDy of the linGS which al~e providinc an inadequate
supply in variow3 locations nill have been re~Jlacod vritl1 the proper size lines.

In vimV' of tIlt) number of houses inside 2..nd outside of the City 1:LlJ1its that
the 2-inch water line along Eulberry Road is nOl'\f serving and the lack of fire
protection for residences located along lilulberry Road, I believe that we
should replace this line as soon as funds are a v2.:U_Jble. In view of the
cost of repl:lcinr: the remainin;:: part of the 2-incll linG within the City
limits along ;;ulborry l'~oad, I an of tho onin:LoCl tha:~', '~his re')12.cement should
be accomplished in stages and that each of these stages of replacerrent of
this line should be c onsidcrec 2,S comDarecl to the need for sim=Llar replace-
ments in all areas in the City.

Stage 1 would be the replacement of the section of water line from the end
of the exis ting 8-inch line southward a long I\Iulberry Road to Knollwood Place.
Stage 2 would be to replace the section of water line along Mulberry Hoad
from Knollvwod Place to Cor n Tassel 'l'rail. Stage 3 Tvould be to replace the
rem2.ining section of water line along Mulberry Road from Corn Tassel Trail
to the City liillits.

We are in the process of preparing om' 1956-57 budget and the replacenent of
the first stage of the total I'll' oject 'will be considerecl along with the need
for new water lines and replacements in other areas of the City. stage 2
shouli be completed as soon as possible thereafter in order to provide a loop
feed for the majority of the Druid Hills anc tho Forest Park area assuming
tha t Lanier Farm, Inc., deve lo!)s Root 'i.'rail and is able to obtain permissi on
to extend a water line along Hoot Trail from Cherokee Trail to Corn Tassel
Trail. By virtue of having these connections nade the residual press1J.re in
this whole 2~rea would be greatly imrlroved, thereby siving o. large number of
residences in the Forest Park and Druid Hills section much better fire protec-
tion.

I would also reco:an.end that after all areas "within the City limits are adequately
served wi th water tllC:;.t we make an effort to replace inadequate size lines
located outshlA the City l:L"';li ts.

Th0) residents along IC-'1011wood Place coulc: provide tl,ernselves with an adequate
sllppl:r of water at a very small cost by replacing the section of I-inch line
which is along Knollwood Place with a 6-inch line far approximately 175
lineal feet. This ;3hould IJrovide this street with an amnle supply of water
except for fire fi::o;hting pur}Joses u..'1til such time D.S the City is in 2. position
to replace the ror:18,ining segment of small line '..;ith an ample size line for
home use 2.nd fire rll.~otection.

Thank you very TIl"J.ch.

George Vi. ::jrown, Djrector
Water and street Division
