<br />4 <br /> <br />TUESDAi <br /> <br />APJ.IL 10, 1956 <br /> <br />Mayor Hodnett reDorted that local representatives and Dcrsons interested in the <br /> <br />work of the Vjrginia Travel Council have not yet sug!':ested a nominee to coordinate <br /> <br />local activities in connection with Virginia's forthconing 350th anniversary <br /> <br />celebration and, therefore, the matter would be continued. <br /> <br />Council received a cOlT'.Dunication from the State Highway Depcrtment informing Council <br /> <br />that revised estiYll2.tes indicate that the Cas t of surveys and plans for East Church <br /> <br />Street improvements to its :l...l1tersection with Chath3Ill IIoif;hts (Houtes 57 and 53), <br /> <br />inc]~ding a proposed fO~~.r-lane bridge in place of the present pridge across the <br /> <br />Carolina and Northwestern ltaiJ~Nay, would cost ~~14,000.00, of which the City's share <br /> <br />would be half, or :~7,000.00; however, the Highway ~partment pointed out that vrith- <br /> <br />out the new bridge plans the project's survey and plalw would cost $6,000.00, of <br /> <br />which the Cit'J would pay one half, or ~~3,000. Council took note of that fact that <br /> <br />on January 25, 1956 it haC. approved the latter phase, then estimated to cost the <br /> <br />City ~p2 ,OOO.OO-or one-half). <br /> <br />~ <br />Coun::il then voted to req1J.est the Highway Department <br /> <br />to nraceed with this phase of the work--at a total cost of ~~6,000.00 of which the <br /> <br />City would bear 50%, payable after July 1, 1956--but urged the Highway Department <br /> <br />to eli.'1',:lnate the new bridge plans and design from the j_n:l tial study. <br /> <br />Subject to the approval of City Attorney stone as to the meeting of all require- <br /> <br />ments by the petitioners, Council approved for Llayor Hodnett's signature a deed <br /> <br />in connection wi th the closing and abandoning of an ullopened section of Smith- <br /> <br />Rucker Road, as requested on March 8, 1955 by Messrs. S. H. and J. A. Balch'iin. <br /> <br />Subject to the workinz out of certain details of a proposed lease agreement between <br /> <br />the Council and the L!2rlJinsville-Henr'J County Airport Development Corporation, <br /> <br />Council indicated tr~t it intends to execute a lease agreement with the Airport <br />
