<br />2J <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />SEP~~ER D, 1960 <br /> <br />.- <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst noted that, from conferences already held with Appalachian <br /> <br /> <br />officials, the power company does not wish to dispose of its facilities and is <br /> <br /> <br />reluctant to quote a sale price. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously <br /> <br /> <br />carried, Council expressed its desire to exercise its right to acquire these <br /> <br /> <br />facilities and, further, requested from Appalachian its sale price. <br /> <br />,,,,,,,-, <br /> <br />In order that adequate consideration might be given, Council requested from the <br /> <br />City's constitutional officers their salary and expense requests-as to be presented <br /> <br />to the State Compensation Board for the calendar year 1961-for consideration at <br /> <br />Council's next regular meeting. <br /> <br />A conunendation from the National Safety Council, in the form of a traffic safety <br /> <br /> <br />award, was received by Council through City Manager Hirst on behalf of the City's <br /> <br /> <br />Police Departrrent and 'Iraffic & Planning Department. <br /> <br />The State Highway Cormnission notified Council of a public hearing to be conducted <br /> <br />by the Cormnission in Roanoke, Virginia, October 4, 1960, on the location of <br /> <br />Interstate Highway 77. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />Lester Lumber Company, Inc., from whom right-of-way was acquired by easement far the <br /> <br />widening of Route 220 North, requested that Council exchange certain right-of-way <br /> <br /> <br />along the right side of this highway with Lester Lumber Company to provide for a <br /> <br /> <br />better realignment of property lines. Through Mr. Thomas J. Childress came the <br /> <br /> <br />request that the City abandon certain right-of-way on the left side of Route 220 <br /> <br /> <br />North in order that frontage might be provided on the highway for the J. S. Harris <br /> <br /> <br />property east of Modern Furniture Company. Council agreed to view both requests in <br /> <br />the near future. <br />
