3~

TUESDAY

APRIL 27. 1965

--

City Manager Hirst informed Council that the Martinsville Volunteer Fire

Company has expressed a continuing interest in the City's 1924 American-

LaFrance Fire Engine with the hope that in the not-too-distant future,

if the City will donate this engine to the Volunteer Fire Company, the Company

will be in a position to restore this vehicle for display purposes. Mr. R. E.

Seidle, Jr., was also present in connection with his recent offer to purchase

(for $100.00) this vehicle for restoration purposes. Council went on record

as retaining custody of the engine for a reasonable period of time (perhaps

for two years, if need be) until such time as the Volunteer Firemen can restore

the ve~icle; however, if the firemen at that time are not in a position to

restore the vehicle, to give Mr. Seidle first refusal.

In acceptance of the Patrick-Henry Dental Society's recent recommendation, and

there being no obj ections regis tered, Council adopted the following ordinance

(as placec on first reading April 13, 1965) providing for the introducing of

fluorine into the City's public water supply as a deterrent to tooth decay:

WHEREAS, it appears to be the consensus of scientific medical and
dental opinion, as presented to Martinsville City Council, that
the :rresence of fluorine in drinking water is a deterrent to tooth
decay; and

<,,'-

WHEREAS, the said concensus of oplnlon advises that the quantity of
fluorine found in the natural supply of water distributed to the
citizens of the City of Martinsville is insufficient to gain the
full benefit that this chemical can offer in the deterrent of
tooth decay; and

WHEREAS, it appears that fluorine can be introduced in the water as
furnished to the citizens of Martinsville as a measure to promote the
public health and good; now, therefore,

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MARTINSVILLE, VIRGINIA,
AS FOLLOWS:

,-

Section 1. Upon reC8lvlng the permit from the Virginia Department
of Health and until further direction of the City Council, the Public
Works Department is hen3by authorized and directed to provide the
means and to proceed with the introduction of sodium fluoride or
other suitable salt or acid of fluorine into the water supply in
such quantities as are required to maintain throughout the pipe
