<br />prepared and recorded inadvertently transferring ownership of the street to
<br />
<br />these purchasers of these lots, the last of these purchasers being Mr. Morton
<br />
<br />
<br />W. Lester or the Lester Corporation, for whom the City agreed on July 28, 1964,
<br />
<br />
<br />to construct a sewer line to serve these lots (being five in number) upon the
<br />
<br />
<br />condition that the Lester Corporation contribute $400.00 per lot, plus usual
<br />
<br />connection fee. In order that the records regarding this street might be
<br />
<br />corrected, the Lester Corporation by deed conveyed this street to the City,
<br />
<br />which deed of conveyance Council went on record as accepting.
<br />
<br />In noting the retirement on September 4, 1964, of Detective Sergeant Jesse I.
<br />
<br />
<br />Shumate, a member of the Police Department force since November 1, 1929, Council
<br />
<br />
<br />commended Mr. Shumate for his outstanding record of service to the City and its
<br />citizens.
<br />
<br />On behalf of the First Baptist Church, located on Starling Avenue, Mr. Bradford
<br />
<br />H. Hill (by letter dated August 31, 1964) requested the widening of Mulberry Road,
<br />
<br />on the north side, from Oakdale Street to Starling Avenue, in anticipation of the
<br />
<br />development of church-owned property along this section of Mulberry Road, the
<br />
<br />First Baptist Church being the owner of all property--with the exception of
<br />
<br />that owned by the W. H. Gravely Estate--fronting the north side of this section
<br />
<br />of the street. Council indicated that it would give consideration and study to
<br />
<br />this request.
<br />
<br />Under date of August 27, 1964, the Auditor of Public Accounts of the Commonwealth
<br />
<br />
<br />of Virginia reported (by audit) that a full accounting has been made by Mr.
<br />
<br />
<br />Jesse D. Clift, Clerk of Martinsville City Circuit Court, of all funds of record
<br />
<br />
<br />within his custody for the calendar year 1963.
