2

TUESDAY

MAY 26, 1964

...-

was Lacy }lanufacturing Company, whose plant is located at Cliff and Adell

Streets and whose employees have difficulty entering Starling Avenue at

peak traffic periods. City Manager Hirst informed Council that, in the

interest of traffic movement as well as in pedestrian safety, widening

the north side of Forest Street near and to its intersection with Starling

Avenue, to provide two lanes of traffic entering Starling Avenue, along

with a traffic island, should help alleviate traffic problems, although

it is doubtful that a traffic signal light would help reduce the overall

congestion. Mayor Wilson recommended that no action be taken pending further

study and recommendations by the City's Traffic Engineer; however, Council

directed that traffic signal lights be installed (at an approximate cost of

$1,800.00) at the earliest possible moment, realizing that if such an

installation is not the answer the lights can be used elsewhere.

Council continued for further consideration the pending petition of Prillaman

& Pace, contractors, requesting business license tax relief for the petitioner

and other business firms of the same license tax category.

~-

Council ac~nowledged with appreciation--and directed its Clerk to so convey

by letters--receipt of a donation of $600.00 from the Martinsville-Henry County

Pony League and a donation of $300.00 from the Little League, as contributions

towards the Clearview Playground lighting project.

-

Subject to final approval by the City Attorney as to form and by the Planning

Commission as to map, Council authorized the executing by City Manager Hirst--

on behalf of the City--of a contract with Mr. Garrett Wells (and others),

developers of Tanglewood Drive (formerly Victoria Road), permitting the

extending of a City water main by the developers under terms of the ordinance

governing the extending of water and sewer mains outside the corporate limits,

--._._.._._......__.__.___..___,.'...__mo._.._._._.........__,__...... .'- - .._..",......~_.__..._.._."_,_~__.~.,,.___~,_.,_._._~__,___"_'~,,~_._.._,,'.n____".__

"''.___.__._____"__"__ '0--"'- _ _ _._.___.___.__~_~.,___.___~..__.__
