<br />00 <br /> <br />TUESDAY MAlWH 25, 1969 <br /> <br />the Board. School authorities also estimated an increase of $25,000.00 <br /> <br />in income from State sources. Upon motion, Council approved the Board's <br /> <br />recommended 1968-69 budget. Meanwhile, Chairman Henry C. Reed announced <br /> <br />that School Superintendent Richmond has been reappointed for a four-year <br /> <br />term (beginning July 1st); that Mrs. Martha H. Lawrence has resigned as <br /> <br />School Board Clerk, effective June 30th, to continue her college studies <br /> <br />toward a degree; that Mrs. Lynda Pulliam will succeed Mrs. Lawrence as <br /> <br />S~hool Board Clerk; that Mr. Frederick T. Gray, Attorney at Law, has been <br /> <br />retained by the School Board as legal consultant in the interpretation <br /> <br />and application of "guidelines" promulgated by the Department of Health, <br /> <br />Education and Welfare; and that the School Board has sold its North <br /> <br />Martinsville Elementary School (now occupied by Patrick Henry College) <br /> <br />to Sale Knitting Company, Inc., for the sum of $42,000.00, there being <br /> <br />no other offers received. <br /> <br />The Reverend John Thomas, Pastor of Rich Acres Christian Church, accompanied <br /> <br />by a number of concerned citizens, appeared before Council and protested <br /> <br />the currently unrestrained public presentation of both written and visual <br /> <br />material, described as obscene and pornographic, including the so-called <br /> <br />adult-type movies being shown in the area. Mr. Rives S. Brown, Jr., owner <br /> <br />of several local theaters, expressed like concern but indicated that the <br /> <br />movie exhibitors have little choice in the selection of movies offered, <br /> <br />especially in that the majority of movies now produced are not for the <br /> <br />general-type audience, and that the best the movie exhibitors can do is <br />to <br />advertise the ratings attached/these movies in order to forewarn parents. <br /> <br />Council was informed that ordinances have been attempted elsewhere in <br /> <br />Virginia in an effort to control movie showings but such ordinances have <br /> <br />been ruled invalid.
