(\ f ~
. J U

TUESDAY

MARCH 11. 1969

Subject to retention by the City of a perpetual easement to maintain its

electric transformer bank (now located to the rear of the former City Hall),

as well as other City utility easements thereby, with "reverter clause",

Council accepted the written offer of Grand Piano Company (Roanoke, Virginia)

to purchase the former City Hall property for the sum of $60,000.00.

In connection with the preparation for the required and forthcoming

(quadrennial) 1970 reassessment of local taxable property, Council requested

the State Department of Taxation to furnish certain appraisal technicians

and advice to assist in this reassessment, as has been made available to the

City in recent prior reassessments.

Subject to its action taken May 28, 1968, the Council granted an extension

of a special-use permit--granted that date to the Martinsville Volunteer Fire

Company--to allow the conduct of the 1969 Firemen's Bazaar at Brown Street

Field during the period June 23rd-28th, 1969.

Council acknowledged receipt of--and presentation by Dr. Charles J. Mathes,

Health Director--a report of the 1968 activities of the local Health

Department as well as a "Solid Waste Report" prepared by the Virginia

Department of Health. In the latter report, Martinsville's collection and

disposal methods were rated "excellent". This report also deemed the City's

present landfill acreage as being adequate for the next nine years but

recommended the acquisition of 20-to-25 additional acres to meet the

anticipated needs for the next twenty years.
