,} ') ('
~) A...i )

TUESDAY

JULY 23. 1968

A petition dated July 12, 1968, presented by Custer & Custer Sporting Goods

and requesting the rezoning of this firm's property along Figsboro Road

at the City's north corporate limits from llR_9t1 to an appropriate commercial

classification, was referred to the Planning Commission for its consideration

and recommendation.

Two other and separate petitions--from Martinsville Ice Company at 405 Bridge

Street and from Martinsville Coal & Oil Company at 406 Bridge Street--

requestingthe rezoning of these two locations from lC_3" to "M_2'1 were

similarly referred to the Planning Commission for consideration and recommendation.

Council received, and gave study to, a letter (dated July 22, 1968) from

Mr. J. L. Flora, Jr., Regional Real Estate Officer for the United States Post

Office Department, stating that the Post Office Department is considering the

use of property located between Spruce and Brookdale Streets, near their

intersection, as a new main Post Office facility for Martinsville. The letter

posed four questions (concerning the City's development plans and the City's

zoning regulations) and, also, requested Council's opinion as to the general

suitability of this site for a new Post Office, which would be developed

under private ownership and leased to the Federal Government. After hearing

from the local Postmaster and from a member of the City's Planning Commission,

Council referred Mr. Flora1s inquiry to the Planning Commission for study

and recommendation.

Upon recommendation of the City Manager and the Director of Public Works,

Council authorized the postponing of the effective date of Section D of an

ordinance which became effective July 26, 1967, to September 1, 1968, thus

deferring the effective date (of July 1, 1968) on which the cost of domestic

sewer connections are to increase from $25.00 to $125.00 each.
